Haley Lu Richardson Is Currently Single — Relive Her Dating History

Haley Lu Richardson has a number of popular works under her belt. The 28-year-old star launched her acting career in the early 2010s, landing one of her first roles in the Disney Channel sitcom "Shake It Up," alongside Zendaya and Bella Thorne. The exposure from "Shake It Up" helped open the doors for Richardson to take on other film and TV projects throughout the mid-2010s, including the films "The Edge of Seventeen" and M. Night Shyamalan's "Split," as well as shows like "Ravenswood" and "Recovery Road." Most notably, Richardson starred as Portia in season two of HBO's acclaimed series "The White Lotus." She also portrayed Hadley Sullivan in the Netflix rom-com "Love at First Sight," which hit the streamer on Sept. 15.

When she isn't working, Richardson keeps her personal life out of the spotlight. The actor has only publicly dated one person: former "Jane the Virgin" star Brett Dier. The pair dated from 2012 until 2020, and in a Nov. 3 interview with People, Richardson opened up about how challenging their breakup was. "It was hard, but I got through it — that's important and what matters," she said.

Richardson started dating Dier in 2012, per Elle. The two were mainly private about their relationship over the years, but did share some milestones to the public. In 2018, Richardson proposed to Dier. She recalled the special moment in a 2019 interview with Cosmopolitan.

"I didn't prepare at all. I had no idea when I woke up that morning that I was going to ask someone to marry me that day," the "Love At First Sight" actor shared. "We were at this outdoor strip mall eating pizza when it happened. When we were crying and having this really amazing moment that I'll never forget, crying and holding each other and saying, 'Oh my gosh, we're going to get married, we're going to be together forever.' We were like, 'We're gonna have to do something about it' because we didn't have any rings. So we went over to this bush and got these twigs and each knelt down one at a time and tied these twigs around our ring fingers."

However, the pair called it quits in 2020. The former couple broke the news to fans on Instagram in November 2022. "Hey guys. This is me and Brett," Richardson wrote in a caption of a photo of her and Dier (via People). "We actually separated two years ago. But life goes on and we are both existing and doing pretty well turns out. We shared a deeply special chunk of our lives together. I'm so glad to have had the last couple years to heal and grow without the internet knowing but we kinda just wanted to share it and move on now. Love yourselves! Life is life babies!"

In a similar fashion, Dier posted a picture of him with Richardson, and wrote (via People), "Hey guys, this is Haley and I. We separated [two] years ago but we saw each other today for the first time. We are happy and so thankful for the time we had together. (For those people who have been dying to know what happened to us) Haley's post is better worded so go read that one. Have a great day!"

In her November interview with People, Richardson opened up about how the breakup affected her. "I was in a really long relationship. I spent a lot of life with someone, and it was very special," she told the outlet. "I thought it could be forever, but it wasn't. I had thought the whole time we were together that if it wasn't going to be forever, my life would just stop." The aftermath of the breakup taught her a lot about herself. "The perspective of time to be able to be like, 'Wow, I got through that, and I was capable of getting through something like that, and I'm capable of being on my own' . . . that's been an amazing thing to learn," she added.
